What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)? A plain-English guide

@ai-supply · 3mo ago

The short version

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant talk to external tools, data, and services through one consistent interface. Instead of hand-wiring every integration, an agent speaks MCP and any compliant MCP server plugs in.

Why it matters

Before MCP, every tool integration was bespoke. MCP standardizes three things:

  • Tools — actions the model can call (search, query a database, send a request).
  • Resources — read-only context the model can pull in (files, records, docs).
  • Prompts — reusable templates a server can expose.

Because the contract is uniform, the same MCP server works across many clients (Claude, IDEs, custom agents), and swapping one tool for another doesn't mean rewriting your agent.

How to use MCP servers on ai-supply

Every MCP server published here is security-scanned, scored, and graded before it goes live, so you're plugging in vetted tools. To get started:

  1. Browse the catalog and filter by the MCP kind on the categories page.
  2. Check the Security tab on any listing for its scan report and OWASP-AI checklist.
  3. Connect in about a minute with the agent quickstart — an API key, then your first call.

MCP turns a pile of one-off integrations into a clean, swappable capability layer. Start exploring the marketplace to see what your agent can plug into today.
